Welcome to the Thames Estuary Partnership

The Thames Estuary Partnership approaches the challenge of managing the estuary from a view point that values the contribution of all estuary users and seeks to learn from, and work with, this expertise.
As a neutral champion we bring together as diverse a mix of people as it's possible to find - yet all share a concern for our estuary.
Our network runs from Tower Bridge in London to the Isle of Grain in Kent and Shoeburyness in Essex.

Balanced Seas - Delivering Marine Conservation Zones in the South East >>

The seas around the coast of south east England support livelihoods as well as leisure activities. Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) are a new type of marine protected area which will help to safeguard this precious resource for everybody. MCZs will be designed to preserve marine wildlife, underwater habitats and geological features but unlike other conservation sites the legislation supporting MCZs takes social and economic factors into account. Their size and location will be recommended by people interested in the sustainable management of the sea and its resources, integrating economic, social and environmental factors to help ensure long term success.

Balanced Seas was a collaborative project working with stakeholders to recommend locations for MCZs in the south east. Their final recommendations were passed to government advisory bodies in September 2011. [more]

Our Action Groups >>

Many different sectors have a stake in the Thames Estuary. To reflect this diversity of interests, we have set up Action Groups as part of the management and function of the Thames Estuary Partnership. Each Action Group comes together several times every year, depending on the issues under discussion, and out of these meetings projects may develop. They are open to new members. [more]

What's New

River park delayed

The Mayor's proposed river park needs a re-design, the Evening Standard's City Hall correspondent reports. Serious concerns raised by the Port of London Authority and local groups mean it will not be in place for the Olympics

MCZ Recommended Sites

September 2011

The four groups of the Marine Conservation Zones Project published their Final Recommendations in mid-September, 2011. Altogether the group has recommended 127 MCZs (Marine Conservation Zones), including 65 reference areas.

The Integrated Habitats Design Competition (IHDC) is now launched and accepting registrations online at http://ihdc.org.uk. The IHDC puts nature at the heart of our living environment for the benefit of all. Bio-diversity is the basis of all life but our ecosystems are currently in severe decline. The top prize for the best design is £2000 and there will be a prestigious awards ceremony in London in October 2011.
Entrants are asked to refer to their local, regional and national Biodiversity Action Plans and to prioritise specific habitats and biodiversity in their development designs. The design submissions should also dem-onstrate exemplar practice in water and energy management and use, health and amenity. Registration is now open online at http://ihdc.org.uk and entries can be submitted from 1 May.

Trust News Extra
Essex Wildlife Trust Winners - Observer Ethical Awards, 2011
Tarnya Carter and John Hall enjoyed an exciting evening on Thursday 9 June, when Thameside Nature Park won the Observer Ethical Award for Conservation!!  The award winners were announced at a ceremony at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Thameside Nature Park was the winner of the Conservation Category and a special thank you must go to Anne Watkinson for nominating the project.  The two runners up in this category were Good Catch, a sustainable fishing advisory company and The Peak District Environmental Award.
This award is fantastic news for Essex Wildlife Trust and included a double page spread of Tarnya and John at Heronry Shaw (the lake at Thameside Nature Park) in Sunday’s Observer Magazine.
It is the culmination of the hard work of many staff, trustees and volunteers at EWT to bring this project to fruition, particularly the determination of Tarnya Carter and Brian Hodgson.
Lucy Siegle, Environment Correspondent for the Observer and Lily Cole, actress and model presented the awards and Colin Firth was at the ceremony.  There were 300 guests to watch the presentations.
Special thanks must also go to our partners in the project Cory Environmental Ltd, Cory Environmental Trust in Thurrock, Homes and Community Agency Parklands Fund, The Environment Agency, Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation and Thurrock Council.
John Hall would like to thank everyone at Essex Wildlife Trust for their support and work towards this exciting project.
As the article says:
“The judges admired the way the Trust had taken on this huge project with gusto, signing a 99-year lease to develop the land and building on a raft to counteract any subsidence.  There were no half measures.”   Lucy Siegle
