TE2100 is a project which developed a long term tidal flood risk management plan for the Thames Estuary to identify what action will be needed through this century to manage flood risk to people and wildlife.

Do we need a new Thames Barrier? Do we continue to build flood walls higher or try to make space for water? How do we ensure the diverse needs of communities are reflected in our future planning? These are the issues at the heart of the Environment Agency's Thames Estuary 2100 Plan.

In 2008 we arranged a series of evening talks and weekend open days with the Environment Agency -in conjunction with local partners - to update communities and organisations across North Kent and Essex on the Environment Agency's Thames Estuary 2100 project. Jill Goddard attended the evening meetings to provide a neutral chairing role for the EA presentation and resultant discussion. At the moment we are working closely with the Environment Agency to discuss the TE2100 implementation work.

More information about this ambitious Environment Agency project can be found on their website:

1953 Floods

In January 1953, the east coast of England was devastated by some of the worst flooding in recent memory. A number of extreme weather events combined to cause major flooding in areas throughout Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent and the outer Thames Estuary. 307 people died, 24,000 homes were damaged or destroyed and over 30,000 people were evacuated. Damage in monetary terms was estimated at over £5 billion in today's money.... [more]
