Maintenance dredging in the Thames Estuary is an issue of importance to a range of organisations and sectors. The Dredging Liaison Group (DLG) was established by the Thames Estuary Partnership in January 2001. It has been shown to provide an effective, neutral and open forum within which the requirements for planning and implementation of maintenance dredging operations on the tidal Thames can be discussed, and any associated concerns can be addressed.
If you are interested in becoming a member and attending meetings, or learning more about this group then please contact the TEP office.
NEXT MEETING DATE: Tuesday 13th September 2011 13:00 - 15:00
Hosted by TEP. To be held in:
UCL Environment Institute, Room G07, Pearson Building, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT
Agenda to follow in due course.
What does the DLG aim to achieve?
Amongst the objectives of the DLG are the following:
- Provide an advisory function to the dredging legislative process,
including the application of existing and new legislation.
- Provide a consultation mechanism by circulating dredging applications
received by the Port of London Authority. Highlight any concerns via comments received from DLG members and where possible suggest measures to limit perceived impacts
- By the circulation of dredging notices, inform DLG members of the
methodology and operational deployment of dredgers and barges.
- In the interests of the good management of dredging operations, further
an understanding between DLG members of estuarine processes that are relevant to dredging, including presentations on: . Legislative requirements and best practice guidelines; . Dredging methodologies; . Hydrodynamics and sediment transport; . Environmental impacts of dredging; and . Other individual expertise.
- Encourage the sharing of relevant data.
- Encourage use and understanding of the Port of London Authority's
Dredging Spatial Information System (DSIS).
- Identify common research needs and facilitate their development.
- Encourage collaboration and co-ordination between DLG members in the
development of dredging schemes and disposal options.
- Encourage the beneficial re-use of dredged materials by promoting the
different options available.
