The Thames is an example of a recovering ecosystem which is of great ecological importance not only to London, Kent and Essex but also to the North Sea and upstream catchments of the upper Thames. The Biodiversity Action Group (BAG) was established by the Thames Estuary Partnership in January 2001.
What does the BAG aim to achieve?
Amongst the objectives of the BAG are the following:
- To maintain and enhance the diversity and populations of habitats and species supported by the estuary, whilst recognising their fundamental interdependence and history of losses and fragmentation;
- to exchange ideas;
- to encourage collaboration and inter-agency co-operation in the increase understanding of the dynamics and distribution of species and habitats throughout the estuary and monitor their status;
- and work to avoid further direct habitat loss of protected and other valued sites, whilst promoting the management of sites to optimise their nature conservation value
